What is misarticulation?
Mis means - to disappear.
Articulation means - the articulaters that help us to produce our sound like tongue, teeth, lips etc. due to them our voice becomes misaligned, this is called articulation. In Hindi we call it stammering.
Children have problem in mis-articulation at four levels - which we also know as SODA.
S - substitution
O - omission
D - distortion
A - addition
S - substitution - substitution means to change or replace. Replacing a word with another word. Like - he starts saying "ka ko ta", "kha ko tha" etc. He starts converting words like "kaam ko taam", "kharja ko thagosh".
O - Omission - omission means to delete or finish. Removing a word completely. Like - he starts saying "school ko kul", "play ko pay".
D - Distortion - Distortion means using unfamiliar sounds. Which have no coordination. Like - "Ka ko L" starts saying "L" as "R".
A - Addition - Addition means inserting extra sound i.e. adding any other word. Like - "School ko iskol" starts saying.
Mostly we see that children have more problem of substitution. About 80% children face this problem. Most parents feel that the child is only saying single word wrongly but children face problem at 3 levels -
Primary
Secondary
Tertiary
Primary - In this the child says the first word wrongly. Like - "Kamal ko tamal", "Kabootar ko tabootar" he says the first word wrongly.
Secondary - In this the child says the middle word wrongly. Like - "Makaan ko matan", "Sakta ko satta" he makes such mistake. But parents pay less attention to these words so they are not able to notice it. Teritary - In this the child speaks the last word incorrectly. For example - "sadak ko sadat", "palak ko palat". When the child speaks the full sentence, attention is not paid to secondary and tertiary problems.
